Our History

In the year 2015, a group of 6 high school immigrant students from Ghana met in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the Bronx, New York. These 6 students shared not only a common culture and a common faith, but also a common struggle. As immigrants from Ghana they were faced with a significant lack in understanding of how to pursue higher education in the United States. Though they sought

information from school resources they often felt discouraged and ill-equipped to take the necessary steps towards their dreams. To solve this issue, the students formed a coalition of scholars who would support each other’s academic pursuits by piecing together critical information, study materials, professional skills, and connections in order to improve their overall chance of reaching their goals. As a result, each of those 6 students made it to college. And then, having seen the value of united investment in the success of their community, these scholars sought to extend their resources and their knowledge to their peers and fellow scholars back home on the African continent.

Scholars in Our Society and Africa was registered as a corporation with the State of New York in 2017 and received 501c(3) status in 2018. Since then, SOSA has grown to encompass a body of over 100 members based in the USA with direct ties to various countries on the western and eastern hemispheres. We have launched and funded five projects/programs across the globe in the course of five years including the renovation of the Bolgatanga Regional Library in Northeastern Ghana, the establishment of an Information Communications and Technology(I.CT) laboratory in Rwanda, the facilitation of a book donation program to schools and libraries in Ghana, Women Health Workshop in Nigeria and the formalization of a mentorship and college preparation program for inner city students in New York City. SOSA has since operated as a coalition of scholars across various college campuses drawing on their skills to accomplish tasks and address common struggles in the diaspora and across the continent of Africa.

Testimony

I joined SOSA to make an impact on others. What I didn’t expect was that this organization would give its members the creative and hands-on freedom so much to the point that as a member you would see the results of your mentalities and physicalities. Since being in SOSA I have worked on the team that provided a student with a new wheelchair and school supplies and on the team that provided computers to a Junior High School in Ghana. Now, I work daily to Bring peoples attention to the organization so that they too can be a change maker.

SOSA, my dear best friend, I have gained so much meaning to life by spending time with you. You have taught me to be better, not just for myself, and to embrace a purpose larger than my existence. I am forever grateful to have this opportunity to serve. Change is the power that lies in our hands thanks to this organization.
